after shooting weddings + engagements for the last 5 years, there’s one question I hear ALL THE TIME: what do I wear for my engagement session?

not long after the ring is on your finger, you’ve had the surprise engagement party, cried happy tears with your mom and dad, + you’ve started dreaming about your day with your fiancé, you begin thinking… what about engagement photos?!

as you gear up for engagement photos, there can be SO much pressure- you’ve waited for this event your entire life, and now today is the day! what do you pick out?! the black dress from target, or the soft beige sweater that you got for christmas last year? is this the time to go more bold with your fashion choice, or stay safe? should you add in a hat or a headband? and what should your fiancè wear?!

NO WORRIES! this is incredibly normal 🙂 after having conversation after conversation with engaged humans, I have created guidelines to help solve the stress + worry, so that picking out an outfit becomes the FUN & montage worthy experience it’s meant to be!

I tell all of my couples to follow the 3 golden rules that will IMMEDIATELY steer them to their iconic outfit choices!

THE 3 GOLDEN RULES:

RULE # 1: STICK TO SOLID COLORS.

this is vital! unless you + your fiance’s style is crazy patterns enmeshed together, stick to solid colors. you want you + your fiance to be the most important part of the photo you’re creating, and when you add in bright + extreme patterns, they become distractions. when you stick with solid colors, you also get the added bonus of these photos looking more timeless. trends will come and go, but these photos will stay forever! so the more you stick with solid colors, the longer the photos last. stick with those solids bbs!

RULE # 2: WEAR SOMETHING THAT REPRESENTS YOUR STYLE.

so many times we can become overwhelmed by all of the inspiration we see on pinterest, instagram, or tik tok- and we can try to put together something that represents someone else, and not us. pick something that shows YOU! whether that’s adding feathers, wearing all black, rocking a headband, or wearing rings & bracelets- make the details represent YOU. these photographs should scream you + your fiance! SO – stick with an outfit that you know you’ll resonate with.

RULE # 3: CHOOSE SOMETHING THAT YOU FEEL HOT IN!

this is the most important one- for your engagement photos, make sure you pick something that YOU FEEL HOT IN! if you wear a dress that your mom tells you she loves, but you feel self conscious about how you look in it – you have my permission to not wear it. 🙂 those feelings of awkwardness will translate to the photos, and you will have spent an hour wearing a dress that you didn’t feel that confident in! go straight to the outfits that make you want to keep checking yourself out in the mirror. you should feel like a model – have FUN with it!

overall, it’s easy to feel nervous about engagement photos- but this should be the FUN part! pick a couple outfits, bring a couple accessories, & have the BEST time. it’s officially your time to feel like a MODEL, BABE! letsgoooooo!
